Salaam friends,

Ramadan Mubarak!

I know… it’s been a long time. I’m not going to make any excuses!

We have a lot of new friends on this newsletter. I want to welcome you to this haphazard place where I share my thoughts on living, books, and other things I find interesting.

This Ramadan, I committed to daily journaling (I missed day two, don’t judge me). So I thought I’d share entries throughout the month that feel shareable. I will not change anything about the entry, so if it feels raw or incoherent then it’s just a glimpse of my monkey mind, and really bad writing. To save myself from embarrassment, I will try to correct spelling and grammar mistakes, to make it readable that is.

Here you go…

Day 1 - Ramadan

Last night, the first night of Ramadan, a friend said to me, “I can’t believe it’s Ramadan.”

I have reflected on this statement, and the concept, many, many times. It visits me during big events; it stops my mind from the everyday hustle. It whispers a reminder of how time passes: quick, it doesn’t wait, it doesn’t consider our happy or sad moments. It just passes, continuously.

We all know this. It’s not wisdom. But we forget. We forget often!

I replied to my friend, “On the night of Eid, you’ll say the same: How fast did Ramadan go?”

I can tell he was moved a little, so I pushed it even further…

Two days ago, I visited my 95-year-old grandmother. She was once a 30-year-old woman with hopes and dreams. Now, there is just agony, small moments of joy, and waiting.

Seeing my friend moved, I added, “Then you will say it again, when you are 70 or 80, bed bound: ‘How fast did life pass by?’”

He looked at me like we didn’t know each other.

I think to be content in life is to summon this idea often. There is probably a direct correlation between the two: remembering death and contentment.

It sounds grim, but also hopeful, like most beautiful things in life—a contradiction.

Of course I didn’t know which flour my wife meant when she sent me for pre-Ramadan prep cooking.
