Increments Weekly - January 08, 2022

Salaam all,

Here are the things crossing my mind for Increments Weekly. Please feel free to forward this to friends.

I sent the first few newsletters to myself. Now we’re 16 strong. Thank You for signing up, and I hope you’re having fun reading these as much fun as I’m having writing them. I also hope this is offering you some sort of value ✨

📖 Books I’m reading?

I’m currently reading Storywothy by Mathew Dicks. I barely can put this book down. Mathew is a 36-time Moth StorySlam and 5-time GrandSlam champion. The first time he told a story in front of a crowd, he wanted to walk away. He prayed that his name wouldn’t be picked from the hat. But his name was called, he thought about ignoring the MC until the next name gets called. But Mathew’s wife was with him, and she nudged him to go on stage. He walked up to the mic, he told his story, and it was ranked #1 that night.

In the beginning, everything is uncomfortable, and experience only replaces discomfort with doubt.

🍿 Movies I’m watching?

I watched The Truman Show earlier this week, and I can’t believe how long it took to watch it. This was my first time, and though I knew of the movie, the message, and the plot, experiencing it in one sitting was transforming. It made me think about my goals and fears, the social bubble that’s around me, and the journey it takes to find answers.

🧰 Tools for life

For many years, I used a physical planner where every morning I jotted down a to-do list and checked off items as the day went by. But that planner was always in my bag, which I only carried at school or the workplace. But for the past few months, I have been using the app Todoist, which does what my planner used to do and more. It changed the game for me. The app makes capturing a to-do list easy, especially if you create a widget on your phone home screen where you just click on it and jot down things as you go. I have a monkey mind, and this app frees me from thinking about the package I need to drop off on Saturday, my friend's engagement party in two months, or even the color of the sandals I need to add to one of my characters on the story I’m working on. This is not an organizing tool, like a calendar, but a capturing one. More on organizing in a future email.

🔖 Quote I’m pondering

“A person's success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have.”         — Tim Ferriss
