Hey, I'm Mohamed.

I’m a writer.

In 2007 I migrated to New York from Yemen. I spent the first three years trying to read my first English novel. By the time I graduated from college, I was reading up to six books a month. Soon I began to journal about my childhood in Yemen and what it means to live in a place you weren't born in. But I found adding to my stories people I didn’t meet and incidents I didn’t experience. I was amazed by the freedom to express myself through characters and events born out of my imagination. Fiction made it possible for me to time travel.

I continued to write, and each story that didn't work taught me something about the craft. Eventually I enrolled in Hunter College MFA program. The two years I spent there gave me what I yearned for, a community that shared my passion for reading, writing, and storytelling. This inspired me to start a YouTube channel, where I explore how writing and reading can bring clarity and help make sense of the world—and how to find time for creativity, even with a busy life.

Outside of writing, I’m a father to a beautiful girl with whom I wrestle often. I find joy in taking long walks, going for runs, and playing soccer.
